What to do if you owe tax

The Law offices of Ronny Buni offers much more than the menu of products you'll see at other firms: offer in compromise, installment agreement, penalty abatement, etc. I also address the underlying problem so that you can immediately stop accumulating tax problems.

If you're looking for temporary relief or to prolong your problem, or if you're not really ready to be helped, I won't be the right attorney for you. I'm the right attorney if you're ready to solve your problem now. I give my clients careful attention. I research the law and apply it vigorously in my clients' favor.

Beware of firms promoting offers in compromise to settle your tax for "pennies on the dollar" or similar schemes. It may be possible to reduce the tax or penalties you owe, but it needs careful analysis and planning. Click here to see an IRS response to firms advertising "pennies on the dollar" or "slash your tax" approach.

If IRS or another Government agency is trying to collect tax from you, you need to act quickly.

Why you need to act quickly. Several reasons. First, you may have important rights that will expire if you don't act in time. Exercising these rights timely and effectively can be vital to the way your case resolves. Second, failure to act now may mean that the Government will seize your property or money. It's much easier (and cheaper) to prevent the Government from seizing your property or money than it is to get your property released once it's seized. Third, acting now gives you better (and cheaper) control over the ultimate result.

Don't speak to the Government. In collection matters it's common for a collection officer to surprise you at your home or business, either in person or on the phone. If IRS or the Government contacts you, don't speak to them. Get a business card and tell them you're going to get an attorney. Let them know that your attorney will contact them. Otherwise, say nothing. If they are at your door close the door. If you are called on the telephone, hang up. If you are confronted on a public sidewalk, walk away. Then, get an attorney. Tell him what happened.

Don't try to handle it yourself. Collection officers may feign friensdship to win your trust and gain access to essential collection information. You may be asked to sign things or to forbear from exercising important rights that you won't understand without an attorney's advice. A collection officer is a well-trained and experienced professional. You need a well-trained and experienced professional on your side to ensure that you get a result you can live with. Handling collection matters yourself is a false economy. If you have already been handling a collection matter yourself, stop. Get an attorney.
